The unique and explosive band, The Gits, stood apart from other groups of their time and was a vital part of the burgeoning Seattle music scene of the early 1990s. Matt Dresdner, Andy Kessler, Steve Moriarty and Mia Zapata formed the group while at Ohio's Antioch College, and relocated to Seattle in 1989 in search of a new life and audience. With pure conviction and powerful music, they quickly gained popularity in the Pacific Northwest punk scene. Singer Mia Zapata’s strong presence and raw poetic lyrics made her an inspiration to many, and her optimism made her an important catalyst for creativity in the community. The band’s Capitol Hill house and rehearsal studio, affectionately referred to as “The Rathouse,” was the hub of a vast circle of friends and musicians, including the bands 7 Year Bitch and DC Beggars. In the summer of 1993, the Gits had begun work on their second full-length album and by all accounts were positioned to explode onto the national music scene when Zapata was raped and murdered. This senseless act ended the life of a strong and independent woman, cut short the promise of a great musical force, and left many musicians, friends and fans devastated. Join us for the World Premiere of this lovingly crafted documentary celebrating their musical legacy and chronicling the journey from the band’s inception to the tragedy of Zapata’s death to the sentencing of her killer, found a decade later through the use of DNA evidence.
