This study in sexual pathology from Michael Haneke ("Funny Games," "Code Inconnu") features a tour-de-force performance by Isabelle Huppert that won her the Best Actress prize at Cannes. She plays a music professor whose dissatisfaction under a domineering mother (Annie Girardot) leads her into a sadomasochiostic relationship with a student. Not for the faint of heart. Huppert’s costar Benoît Magimel claimed Best Actor at Cannes, where the film itself was awarded the Grand Jury Prize. Adapted from the novel by Elfriede Jelinek.
