Elling
Contemporary World Cinema
Norway, 2001
89 minutes

A recent Oscar nominee for Best Foreign-Language Film, and an enormous hit in its native Norway, this funny and heartwarming film concerns two 40something residents of a mental institution who are sent out to live among what passes for the civilized world. Additional comic tension is supplied by the pair’s vastly different personalities: Elling is a shrinking violet, while his oversized companion fancies himself a veritable sex machine.
