Restored by 40 minutes, this long-unseen gem by noir auteur Jean-Pierre Melville (“Le Samourai”, “Bob le Flambeur”) features three tough guys who meet in the “red circle” of fate. Anti-hero Alain Delon, on his first day out of jail, shrugs off two murder attempts and starts planning his next job with escaped prisoner Gian Maria Volonté and washed-up ex-cop Yves Montand. Together they stage a tour-de-force jewel robbery, but they cannot escape fate.
