As the small boy Sanam runs through a labyrinth of carpets and traditions, we learn about the observances of maturing boys in Islamic Uzbekistan and about the wisdom and intervention of the women in the community. The story spans childhood, youth, courtship, and separation of two fated lovers and the triumph of their love.
